I'll be giving my thoughts on the film District 9 with non-spoiler and spoiler reviews. Hopefully, i can convince you to watch District 9 by the end!

Non-spoiler review

Story

District 9 has complex, three dimensional, and flawed characters. It has a complex story full of substance which takes you on an emotional journey you've never had before! When you look deeper into the film, you can piece together the identity of the aliens and what will likely happen after the end.

Cinematography

The way District 9 opens with amateur ordinary cameras is impressive! It makes you feel as if there is an alien spaceship hovering over human civilization right now!

Acting

The acting is amazing especially the main character! He makes you feel as if District 9 is a documentary! I've never seen acting like this before!

Music

District 9's film score feels deeply spiritual as if calling man to return to its ancient, spiritual, and African roots! It can also build dread effectively!

Theme

District 9 gives a strong message on immigration. The aliens are metaphors for human immigrants. This film challenges people to have compassion for them. Humans who think they are civilized act as if immigrants are savages when the irony is they are savages.

In conclusion, District 9 is a science fiction grand work of art! I highly recommend you to own District 9 on DVD!

How will this DVD change your life?

Its affordable - You're paying less than if you bought this new! Warranties are scams! Warranties don't cover all damages nor do you need them. The store already ensures the product is new. If you take good care of your product, the probability of it breaking is low especially if its very durable and high-quality! DVDs are extremely durable! Save money with this product!

DVDs are cheaper than streaming - Streaming sites are a waste of money. When you compare the time you're not using your monthly subscription to the time you are, you'll see you're not getting your money's worth. It's worse if your internet is poor to where your movies buffer. You could pay more for better internet but think of how much you're spending. With DVDs, you only make one-time buys which save you a ton of money long-term. Already in one month, you're saving $9-14 in your pocket with these DVDs! How much money would you save in a year with this DVD set vs. a streaming service?

DVDs have tangible ownership, streams don't - When you buy DVDs, you technically own them. With streams, you only pay for permission to watch them. If a company no longer wants to have its content in say Netflix's library, the company can request Netflix to remove it. You won't be able to stream it anymore. If a company stops selling a movie on DVD, that's the worst thing they can do. The company won't bother to confiscate your DVD.

DVDs have exclusive content, streams don't - DVDs (namely special editions) have much more content than streaming services such as extended editions, unrated editions, deleted scenes, interviews, "making of" documentaries, etc. Movie streams don't. Typically, streaming services play only standard editions of movies. This DVD has deleted scenes, commentary, and behind the scenes content!

You can resell DVDs but not streams - You can resell DVDs since you have tangible ownership of them. With streams, you don't own them so you can't. Once again, you save a ton more money buying DVDs than streaming.

DVDs have better quality than streams - Quality is determined by bitrate. Higher bitrate means higher quality video and audio. Quality can also be affected by codec encoding and compression techniques. Regular DVDs run at 6-8 megabits per second. Streams usually play movies at lower rates. Netflix for example plays movies at around 5 megabits with a standard connection. If you're a videophile and audiophile like me, what's it costing you to have some of the best video/audio quality possible with this DVD?

DVDs don't require Internet, streams do - If your Internet connection or streaming service fails, you won't be able to finish watching your favorite movies and shows. Nothing is worse than watching one of the most critical and intense scenes in a movie only to be interrupted by say internet lag. It ruins the viewing experience. With DVDs, you don't have those problems.

DVDs look fantastic on display! - DVDs will make your room look much more alive with its stunning physical artwork! There's nothing like holding a DVD of your favorite film or show in your hands! With streaming, everything belongs to the streaming service. It can feel like you're just renting your favorite films and shows. Show how much of a District 9 fan you are to the world by proudly displaying your collection!

Spoiler review

Story

I love how the main character is nervous at the beginning which builds suspense!

I love how the interviews explain the backstory and make the film feel real!

Its unsurprising humans fear aliens and treat them as second-class citizens compared to humans.

You instantly like the main character after you find he's a family man and made crafts for his wife. He's very open with people.

The confrontation between the reporter and colonel was heated! You felt bad for the reporter because he was nice and was just trying to help.

Its absurd and sad humans treat the aliens as if they were so dangerous. Its almost as if the humans want to eliminate them fully! The humans want them to leave although they sense the aliens can't leave! The humans ignore Wickus' advice whicens!es more problems in negotiating with the aliens!

The violence in District 9 is brutal! It makes you feel as if the aliens could kill the humans in am ambush!

It was somewhat disturbing how the police force killed alien babies.

The colonel who shot the alien seemed sadistic. When he ordered a medevac, its almost as if he wanted to threaten Wikus with subtle torture.

Its surprising how the aliens imitate humans to some extent.

When Wikus starts bleeding black and loses his hearing, you start feeling very uneasy about him! District 9 almost turns into a horror film if not fully turn into one when you see Wikus' transformation into an alien! Its scary how humans treat him like a lab rat once his arm turns more into an alien one! Its also sad when you realize his wife is losing the man she loves!

It feels like Wikus personality also starts changing when he's forced to shoot a prawn!

I'm deeply disturbed by how his wife's father is ok with the gov. essentially killing Wikus! The scene when Wikus pleads with him for help is hard to watch and makes you shiver!

When Wikus manages to escape, you can't help but cheer for him as you get an adrenaline rush! You're afraid soldiers will quickly barge in the room he's in with guns and restrain him!

I was shocked when the media slandered Wikus by claiming he had sex with an alien and faking an image! You get another adrenaline rush seeing him in the restaurant as the people there learn he's fugitive!

You feel sad for Wikus when he's hunted down like a dog especially when he sleeps in alien territory and covers himself with trash! Its awful when his wife cries over the phone and tells him basically their relationship is over. Its unclear why. Maybe she believed the media lies or realized their marriage would never return to normal because he's an alien! It was brutal as well as unthinkable when he brings out an axe and wants to cut off his alien body part to try to be human again!

I love how creative this film is! If you turn on the subtitles, you can completely understand what the aliens are saying! This may or may not have been in the theatrical version without subtitles.

You feel Wikus' despair as he slowly develops more and more into an alien! When i learn his wife betrays him to the corrupt gov., i got devastated!

This film builds heart-pounding tension so well! Obesandjo acts as if Wikus is a joke even after he grabs an alien gun! You're afraid someone's going to hit Wikus from behind or try to kill him! The man just laughs, admiring Wikus ability to use an alien gun and not at all scared! At least, it doesn't feel like it!

I was very surprised at how many moments where you feel like all hope is lost only for something to happen that saves Wikus! For example, when he finally gets captured by the gov. - the look on his face tells of utter shock and disbelief! He can't believe he's in their hands again after so much! He can only imagine what they'll do to him! I'm also quite surprised at how advanced the aliens are! The aliens were secretly building advanced tech. apparently to return home!

I love Wikus character! He's flawed because he's selfish. Sometimes, he hurts his allies to get what he wants. What drives him to change is the fact he can't beat overwhelming odds alone! He needs to rely on others for help! In the scene when he tells Christopher's son "we're not the same..", his face showed that he knew deep down - they were the same! Wikus was treated no differently than the aliens were. Even before the infection, he had people to answer to.

District 9 has complex, three dimensional characters and story. When you look deeper into the film, you can piece together the identity of the aliens and what will likely happen after the end.

All of the aliens on the ship are a combination of worker and warrior caste. They are strong and fast but ultimately lack any motivation of their own.Without a leader, they become directionless. On the ship, the leader died.

The aliens came with a mass store of weapons. We see half a dozen types of energy weapons as well as a combat mech that is advanced than human tech. It is only defeated because Wikus has no training in how to use it and doesn't use it to its full potential.) This arsenal are just the items that are smuggled from the ship to District 9. The ship must have a massive armory.

The Prawn technology has biological sensors, so that it will only work for Prawns. Some of the technology will only work for specific classes of Prawn, or only work when activated remotely. We see that with the mech, which doesn't reach full potential until Christopher Johnson activates the mothership's systems.

It becomes clear the ship was a slaver. The aliens locked in the hold weren't even Prawns originally. They were a third species that the real Prawns had attacked, captured, and turned into more Prawn workers through the fluid.Given their general confusion, naivety, and inability to help themselves, it's likely they were an extremely primitive species before they were converted. This is why they couldn't control the ship and why they did not have any information about the Prawns.

The ship was on course for Johannesburg, South Africa to capture more slaves. Johannesburg was a perfect target. It's a populated city at the southern end of the most undeveloped continent on the planet (excluding Antarctica). It is in the opposite hemisphere from most industrialized human civilizations. The aliens could have raided the city for slaves and disappeared before humans had time to organize a response.

Christopher Johnson and his child seem more advanced other prawns. Christopher is motivated and educated beyond the level of other Prawns, and is working to get the command module repaired so that he can go for help. His child is even more active, intelligent, and motivated.

I think Christopher was an intermediate caste, the equivalent of a General. Rather than being a slave who was converted by the fluid, he was a pureblood Prawn. As a General, Christopher would have limited control over the ship's technology. He could activate weapons, and could maneuver the ship locally but he could not make it break orbit or travel between solar systems. Only a Leader could do that.

Christopher was the last survivor of the ship's old leadership. He hid the command module by flying it down to District 9 and commanding worker Prawns to bury it under his shack. He began breeding a new Leader, his son. Only his son could fly the mothership home.

With all of the weapons at their disposal, why did the aliens allow themselves to be herded into District 9? Christopher could have activated the alien weaponry at any time and lead a revolution that would have freed the residents of District 9. The simple answer is he didn't care. They were just slaves to him, and only useful to provide labor and help him hide from humans. His only goal was to protect his son until he was mature enough to operate the mothership and take them both home. He's no different than Wikus in this respect because Wikus also stopped caring about others after he became infected. Wikus was willing to do whatever it took to become human again so he could see his wife. Christopher had a change of heart when he saw the prawns in the lab like Wikus had a change of heart when the humans nearly killed Christopher.

Christopher said he would be back in 3 years. We should hope he was lying to please Wikus. If he really is planning on coming back to earth, he'll be bringing a fleet of slave ships. Personally, i feel he was lying in either case. If he comes back with an army, they won't want to help just one prawn become human again. They'll want to enslave humans to benefit themselves and do the same to humans as humans did to them.

I hope by the end of this article, i can convince you to watch as well as listen to Opera especially if you've never had any experience with Opera.

Opera is poetry, music, and dramatic storytelling all in one - Opera stands out because of this. You can watch Opera as well as listen to it. Other genres can have "stories" in music videos but not to the extent Opera has them.

Opera houses are special - Opera houses can be breathtakingly beautiful which can enhance the overall experience of Opera. Opera houses can make you feel like a guest. Opera houses are built so fans can see the stage from the comfort of their seats from different floors and distances. Opera houses can have a long tradition and art for you to explore before or after the Opera. In many other genres, live concerts are awful physically. Concert halls all look the same. Being in a crowd can make you feel like you're in a herd of cattle crammed in a confined area. Some people report not being able to see artists because of people's arms or heights blocking the view. Heat can cause fans to pass out. Concert halls in other music genres aren't as glamorous. The focus is solely on the music.

Opera singers don't use mics or lip sync - It's extremely rare for Opera singers to lip sync. On the other hand, it seems common for artists in other genres to lip-sync and use mics. It feels like a scam to pay to see artists who only pretend to sing when they feel like it.

Opera is very demanding - Opera singers have to sing over the orchestra and act at once. It's physically and emotionally demanding. Musicians of other genres aren't held up to those standards.

Opera is powerful - Opera singing is physically and emotionally powerful. I've heard people say Opera allows people to express emotion more than other genres. Whether characters are expressing anger, sorrow, hate, or joy in their singing - vibrato helps them to effectively do it well. You can feel their emotions from every note they sing to the music. Characters can only speak so much before speaking is futile and they must burst into song to express themselves to the fullest! Opera is also special because the story is more character-based than story-based. Opera characters have to express themselves much more strongly and dramatically than characters who simply talk in films and TV shows. Films and TV shows tend to show huge dramatic action sequences. The costume and set designs can also help make visual story-telling more dramatic.

Opera is very skilled - It takes a ton of skill to make music in Opera. In other genres, artists aren't held up to those standards. I can't stand pop singers who just play a few notes on the piano while singing. They seem to think it sounds emotional but its really mediocre and bland.

Opera can be very versatile - While people perform the same Operas, they also add fresh new interpretations of them. You can watch and/or listen to Opera. I haven't seen that much versatility in other music genres.

Once again, i hope i convinced you to give Opera a chance!

This might be an unpopular opinion but films and TV shows are overall better than video games. I'll present a case for why that is in this blog post.

Films and TV shows are more accessible than video games - Its alot more convenient and easier to enjoy films as well as shows than video games. Gaming is more expensive than films and TV shows. All you need to watch and enjoy a physical or digital copy of a film is a viewing device such as a TV or computer. Games can require internet, a console, or gaming device which can cost alot more. This is especially true if you need to upgrade to play more powerful games. You could rent a gaming service but you'd still have to pay fees periodically. You don't necessarily have to do the same with films and TV shows.

Films and TV shows have better picture quality - Video games are limited by the rendering engine in the console which depends on cam. angles, character data, the environment, etc Films and TV shows don't really have these limits so overall, they're more realistic-looking.

Films and TV shows help you learn more about the story - I'll admit that games are more interactive than TV shows and films. Nevertheless, this interaction usually doesn't add anything special to the story. For example, you're mostly killing creatures. This set up can feel more like a chore than an enjoyable experience. Sometimes, i find missions and dialogue in video games to be too repetitive. You can explore the beautiful backgrounds in video games like you would an art gallery in a museum but once you've seen them, that's it. In the film, you learn more about things that ultimately matter most - the story, characters, and how their world affects them especially when you rewatch the film. Outstanding films and TV shows cut out the things that don't advance the story. In video games, there's not much story. Even if there is, its hard to focus on it when you're feeling very tense and frustrated because you're focused on survival. When the game goes to a cutscene, you're still mentally recovering from say the last boss fight and aren't paying close attention to the story.

Films and TV shows help you connect more with the characters - People arguing in favor of video games being better than films and TV shows say "video games let you be the character.." This is a good point but how much control do you have over the main character? Films and TV shows allow you to "be the character" in the sense of knowing who he/she is, his/her struggles, etc. In films, you feel a wide range of emotions like sadness and dread when you connect with the characters. Video games don't do that well. You're mainly worried about winning or losing.

In any video game based on the Star Wars episode 1 film, you can play as Qui Gon Jinn or Obi Wan Kenobi and maybe fight like either character. However, you won't feel the same level of intense emotions as either of them when they fought Darth Maul. You won't be able to replicate their exact moves and mindsets from the film.

If you play the Batman Arkham Asylum game for example, you can fight like Batman to some degree. You can use his gadgets. However, you most likely won't be able to fully experience what its like to be the Batman.in a video game. In the Dark Knight film, you can understand things like the burdens Bruce Wayne has to carry wearing the mask and the severe consequences of his actions.

I feel its far more rewarding for me to emotionally connect with the story and characters in films than it is to just control their actions in video games. Ultimately, solid story-telling and characters are what matter most in the end.

These are my reasons for why films and TV shows are better than video games overall. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Most modern day slasher films have failed to inspire creativity and original plots. Because of the same rehashed ideas, the genre is dying. Many horror directors are unnecessarily remaking classic films and butchering them. The results are poor quality and cheap imitations of successful films.

I don't think Hollywood cares if films are scary anymore, as long as people buy it. This is wrong on so many levels and i will explain why by giving a few examples of failed tactics:

* Jump scares - This is where you see a sudden appearance of a killer and you jump out of your seat. The problem with jump scares is that it's too repetitive. I see the terrified main character or characters sneak around to see if someone is lurking in the shadows only to find that a prank was pulled.

* Too much gore - The early pioneers of gory horror films were successful but now it's become the norm. When it's all gore and no plot, it's not scary - it's disgusting. Too much gore becomes cheesy rather than terrifying.

* No plot or character development - All the characters are the same kinds of people. Either they are helpless teens or cops who lack common sense. There's nothing special about any of the main characters.

* Cliche slasher villains - Many of them behave the same way. They almost always seem to slowly walk towards their victims and remain completely silent. They all seem to be rip offs of each other. Nothing truly stands out from them other than their appearance.

Now it's not to say that all modern films are terrible. There are exceptions as some modern horror films were successful despite negative criticism. How can slasher films improve?

* Innovate jump scares - Great jump scares spark curiosity then gradually build up tension, fear, and finally the climax. A fine example of a thrilling jump scare is featured in "The Strangers" when a strange woman knocks on Kristen's door. Notice that the director does not rush the jump scare. Instead, the director tries to make everything as natural as possible. There's no track playing in the background other than the music Kristen plays within the film. The blending of Kristen's slow paces followed by the sudden movements of her attackers, camera work, and short segments of music make the jump scares successful.

* Choose a scary setting - Why are films like "The Strangers" and the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" enticing to me? Because of the setting. The setting chosen makes you feel alone in the middle of the dark with no one to help you. It does not have to be in an abandoned warehouse for it to be scary, it can be in a simple neighborhood. The key is creating a frightening atmosphere within the mind of the viewer.

* Develop the killer - While fans of horror classics may love the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, i thought it was garbage. Mainly because Leatherface's character was very undeveloped compared to the remakes. The original Leatherface's appearance wasn't at all terrifying. He looked much like a ragdoll than a killer. The remakes dramatically changed him. The film "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning" gave him a dark and twisted backstory. It revealed the tormented child-like and tormented human soul under a grotesque mask. Leatherface's appearance is also more intimidating as his size and behavior reflects that of a mentally disturbed adult. We also see him develop into an inhumane killer taking on the mask of human skin and wielding a chainsaw. While the remakes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre are gory, they still have character development.

* Develop plot twists - Making very successful plot twists to reach the film's climax are difficult, but rewarding. This is where the plot takes a quite different direction than the audience expected. Symbolism, the triumph of evil, unresolved conflict, tragic fall of heroes, or disturbing concluding thoughts can all intensify plot twists. A few examples of slasher films with disturbing endings are films such as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, My Bloody Valentine (1981), and Halloween 4.

* Entertain the audience - Having the main characters slip and fall while running away from their attackers gets boring. A film becomes terrifying when the protagonists have used their skills against the villain to ultimately no avail. Having a diverse set of characters such as highly trained policemen, scientists, and average high school students can greatly shock the audience once you know how to use them.

* Induce terror - Horror does not need a violent and brutal killer to be terrifying. There are many different aspects (some mysterious) that create terror in an audience. There was nothing terrifying about Leatherface brutally murdering his victims. What made him terrifying was his apprehension of them at the commands of his family. It was also the environment that made him all the more scary.

* Recreate the genre - Rather than choose a violent killer, be creative. Mix in the plot:
aliens, supernatural spirits, mummies, goblins, and so forth. Films like "Black Christmas" were successful partially because of the different theme other than the norm (via Christmas).

My hope is that one day, horror movie directors will make slashers more entertaining by appealing to various audiences. If they are willing to co-operate with what fans want, the horror genre will be taken more seriously. Interested in the movies i mentioned? Ever since the greatest horror film classics, horror has become a disaster. With all of the CGI and other highly advanced technology we should expect people to be terrified. Unfortunately, this isn't the reaction horror movies give us anymore. When i asked several people their thoughts on said horror movie, the responses are typically "It wasn't scary" as if they were supposed to jump. It doesn't make me shake in fear, it just makes me laugh at how absurd the horror genre has got.

Growing up as a kid, i remember watching my first horror film - Child's Play. I was terrified because Chucky was a child's nightmare come to life. The scenes were intense and the fear built up dramatically. I was afraid of the unknown and unexplainable mysticism of the doll. I've also seen movies such as "Nightmare on Elms Street", "Scream", "Exorcist", etc. I was shocked at the intensity and suspense. The villains of the story were original and shocking. The plot was original and progressive. There's character development and thought provoking moments.

Here are several tactics that got old fast:

1) Jump scares - Countless times, i've seen the same predictable killer's face appear on cam after the victim slowly looks out the window. Countless times, i've seen a chick make stupid mistakes as she runs screaming away from a killer. She's all battered and bloody as she trips over a log. When i watch a cliche horror film, i predict the many "made ya look!" moments. It's the same old tactics. Jump scares are not thrilling anymore because so many films have used them. I don't jump anymore, i just zone out.

2) Gore - When i watched "Saw", i wasn't really scared - i was disgusted. Many horror films use gore as a means to scare the audience to thinking it's horrifying when it's not. As i recall, one YouTube user said "If a killer butchered my friend, i'd be angry!" Don't get me wrong, i like gore but when there's no tension building up - it becomes torture porn. The reaction that the creators want to give the audience goes out the window when all they promote is senseless violence.

3) Vamps, killers, ghosts, demons, etc. - After watching "Night of the living dead", zombie films became a joke. What separated that movie from most is that you could see the dehumanized faces of those who were once dead. Not to mention that the tension built up while leaving a bit of mystery on who the zombies are. The earliest film "Dracula" was very disturbing and iconic. After that, vampires became a laughing stock. Demons are also old as we suddenly see them turn violent and levitate. People are just rehashing the same themes. I'm not saying that they should stop producing them, simply to change their approach.

Modern day horror film fans have forgotten what horror was all about. What i've learned from watching many horror films and comparing them is that it's not about the things i've listed. I used to think that if i didn't jump or tremble in fear, the movie wasn't scary. I later realized the problem wasn't the movie, it was my definition of scary. Watching films like "The Babadook" and "The Omen" made me reconsider what real horror is. The art form was intended to implant a disturbing thought into your mind about human nature.

Sadly, people dislike thinking. They don't want to think about character development, plot twists, foreshadowing, etc. They want instant gratification now. They just want to see egotistical and ignorant teens get killed. They want to see the same ideas with the same characteristics. No one's saying we ought to stop producing those types, only that we focus on the structure of the art.
