I'll be reviewing the horror masterpiece - the Exorcist extended edition (1973). I was disturbed when i watched it twice! This review will contain some spoilers so be warned!

Dialogue:

The dialogue is robust, especially in the scene where the priest confronts his mother.

Cinematography:

The cinematography truly captured the character's faces very well, especially in the scene where the priest visits his mom. I loved the strong opening especially the long shot of the house at the beginning before the light turned off. The lighting is very good at showing gloom, despair, and tension at some points. I love how the film uses wide camera shots of the environment around the characters. It makes us feel the main characters know things others do not.

Characters:

Characters are three-dimensional. It's scary how we don't know exactly how Pezuzu sounds and acts other than through Reagan. The exorcist does a terrific job at making you feel for the characters, especially Reagan. I felt awful watching her undergo torment at the hands of doctors and Pezuzu. Chris is someone who would do anything for her daughter even if she thinks it's ludicrous. I loved how the characters deeply affect one another.

Soundtrack:

I love how in the Exorcist extended movie, there is almost no music. Several omens are shown exceptionally well without music. The Exorcist extended movie is not like other horror movies that excessively use music to try to scare you. When there is music in the Exorcist extended edition, it made you feel like something bad was going to happen.

Acting:

The acting in the Exorcist extended edition was incredible! Reagan MacNeil played her role amazingly well!

Story:

The film's about a girl who becomes possessed. Her mother seeks help from Catholic priests.

The story does a great job of explaining the origin of the villain we're going to face at the beginning of the film. It's disturbing how Pezuzu's face on the artifact resembles Reagan's face later. The Exorcist does a great job of blending horror with elements of crime, drama, and maybe psychological horror. Internal and external conflicts are well balanced.

I love the small subtle scenes that foreshadow what's going on happen such as Reagan's mother and her daughter play fighting. The changing environment around the characters makes you feel bad omens are happening.

The film did a fantastic job of using natural sound and body language to build suspense in its viewers! For example, the father sees strange occurrences and seems very concerned. The Exorcist extended edition does not just focus on horrifying visuals but audio as well.

I love how the horror is in the fact scientists can't exactly pinpoint the problem with Reagan. It's ambiguous whether they know it's supernatural but don't want to admit it or are clueless. Chris Macneil is trapped in an almost hopeless situation.

Reagan's transformation is terrifying throughout the story. I loved the build-up of conflict. Just when you thought things couldn't get worse, they do.

The ending is shocking and dramatic. It's ambiguous and open to interpretation. I interpreted it as good triumphs over evil but at a cost.

Overall, I thought this was one of the best exorcism movies of all time if not the best. I highly recommend buying the Exorcist extended movie edition on DVD! How would you benefit from buying this DVD?

DVDs are cheaper than streaming - Streaming sites are a waste of money. When you compare the time you're not using your monthly subscription to the time you are, you'll see you're not getting your money's worth. It's worse if your internet is poor to where your movies buffer. You're wasting money paying monthly fees. If you pay more for better internet, that's even worse. With DVDs, you only make one-time buys which save you a ton of money long-term.

DVDs have tangible ownership, streams don't - When you buy DVDs, you technically own them. With streams, you only pay for permission to watch them. If a company no longer wants to have its content in say Netflix's library, the company can request Netflix to remove it. You won't be able to stream it anymore. If a company stops selling a movie on DVD, that's the worst thing they can do. The company won't bother to confiscate your DVD.

DVDs have exclusive content, streams don't - DVDs (namely special editions) have much more content than streaming services such as extended editions, unrated editions, deleted scenes, interviews, "making of" documentaries, etc. Movie streams don't. Typically, streaming services play only standard editions of movies. The exorcist director's cut extended edition DVD for example has more footage that was cut out of the theatrical version. It includes a commentary.

You can resell DVDs but not streams - You can resell DVDs since you have tangible ownership of them. With streams, you don't own them so you can't. Once again, you save a ton more money buying DVDs than streaming.

DVDs have better quality than streams - Quality is determined by bitrate. Higher bitrate means higher quality video and audio. Quality can also be affected by codec encoding and compression techniques. Regular DVDs run at 6-8 megabits per second. Streams usually play movies at lower rates. Netflix for example plays movies at around 5 megabits with a standard connection. This DVD has Dolby Digital 5.1 EX.

DVDs don't require Internet, streams do - If your internet connection or streaming service fails, you won't be able to finish watching your favorite movies and shows. Nothing is worse than watching one of the most critical and intense scenes in a movie only to be interrupted by say internet lag. It ruins the viewing experience. With DVDs, you don't have those problems.

DVDs look fantastic on display! - DVDs will make your room look much more alive with its stunning physical artwork! There's nothing like holding a DVD of your favorite film in your hands! With streaming, everything belongs to the streaming service. It can feel like you're just renting your favorite films.

The three extremes film is one of the best horror movies of all time. It's an anthology horror masterpiece. Three extremes film took me on a journey full of disgust, shock, horror, dread, etc.! I was on the edge of my seat for the whole movie! In this review, I'll try my best not to spoil too much because this is a must-watch horror movie!

Stories:

Three extremes had a strong and gross opening story! Three extremes wasn't afraid to include very dark and violent content that might've crossed boundaries!

Three extremes' dialogue was bone-chilling and electrifying! It made the film tenser! In fact, the dialogue is what made the Three extremes film so scary!

The second story "cut" reminded me much of the horror movie "Saw" but it was drastically different. Saw unfortunately became a boring horror franchise full of nothing but torture. The characters in "Cut" are forced to make very hard choices and reveal who they really are under pressure. "Cut" was psychologically brutal and far better than almost all of the Saw movies.

The last story was more dramatic than scary. If I had to list one flaw from the Three extremes film, it would have to be this. Nevertheless, it was still horrifying! When Shoko emerges from the box, that was one of the scariest scenes of the movie! There's no gore in this scene. No one's trying to kill each other. There's just pure psychological torture and torment from Kyoko's guilt over what she did! This is what I love about Asian horror movies!

Soundtrack:

The soundtrack in the Three extremes film made the film scarier and helped us understand the characters! The soundtrack mostly consisted of noise but it was effective! In "Dumplings", the noise emphasized tension and disgust while the beautiful music symbolized the main character's hopes.

The last story made great use of silence to build horror!

Cinematography:

The camera shots (namely moving camera ones) made the Three extremes film more uneasy! The close up shots of the main character staring at the camera made three extremes more disturbing! I loved the use of color in each story of the Three extremes film!

Acting:

The actors were mind-blowing! The acting felt so real especially in cut and dumplings!

Themes:

The opening story "dumplings" gave a scary commentary on Chinese culture that might just become reality. In traditional Chinese culture, people will do extreme things to attain beauty and excellent health. People eat certain foods westerners find disgusting because they believe it will give them certain benefits. China is one of the rare countries that doesn't have dietary restrictions. I wouldn't be surprised if the next step in the quest for beauty for the Chinese is cannibalism.

The second story "cut" had a profound message on the rich and powerful abusing their power. Those of high social status treat those of lower status horribly. What made it scary was how the characters profoundly affected each other. What made this story so scary was the philosophy that good people can become horrible given the circumstances.

The theme of envy was prevalent in all three movies. The Three extremes film warns of the danger of envy and how it can cause people to do horrible things because of a distortion of reality. It's not uncommon in some parts of the world for jealous men to kill their girlfriends simply because they suspected infidelity. This is what made the Three extremes film terrifying!

In conclusion, the three extremes film for all of those reasons is a real horror masterpiece! It had straight raw energy from beginning to end! That's why I recommend you buy the three extremes 2-disk special edition DVD! How would you benefit from buying this DVD?

The Audition 1999 movie is one of the scariest and most disturbing movies I ever saw! It's one of the finest horror masterpieces! When I saw it for the first time, I was deeply troubled and tense. I squirmed in discomfort and disgust. I'll give a non spoiler review then a spoiler review.

Non spoiler review

Story:

Audition is about an old man looking for love. He meets Asami but realizes she's not who she seems to be.

I loved the Audition 1999 movie for its slow-pace but effective approach in building tension and horror!

This was a hard horror movie to watch because there was so much emotion! The Audition 1999 film helped you to understand these are real people with real feelings! The Audition 1999 film is such a memorable Asian horror movie because of its strong characters and compelling story. It's refreshing to have a horror movie like this. There are no poorly made jump scares, weak character development, terrible acting, excessive blood, and guts, etc. like there are in many other horror films.

What I loved about the Audition 1999 movie is its ambiguity. The Audition 1999 film gave you some room to interpret the story.

Dialogue:

The dialogue was powerful! At the beginning of Audition, it felt so natural and realistic. As the film progresses, the dialogue becomes haunting!

Soundtrack:

The Audition 1999 film soundtrack gave me chills! There wasn't really any music. Just ambient ominous noises.

Cinematography:

The cinematography made this film scarier! It was disturbing how the camera is shooting and it stays in a fixed position for a while. I loved the first-person perspective and shaky camerawork. It made the Audition 1999 movie feel more real and lively! It also helped you connect more with the characters!

Acting:

The acting was superb! They were all believable and immersed in their roles! I'm not sure if every character's reaction was realistic in every scene though.

Overall, Audition is a real horror masterpiece. We may never see a horror movie like this again. I highly recommend you buy the Audition 1999 movie on DVD!

Spoiler review

Story:

Audition is about an old man looking for love. He meets Asami but realizes she's not who she seems to be.

I loved the Audition 1999 film for its slow-pace but effective approach in building tension and horror! Audition is such a memorable Asian horror movie because of its strong characters and compelling story.

This was a hard horror movie to watch because there was so much emotion! The Audition 1999 film helped you to understand these are real people with real feelings!

The scenes where the man calls Aoyama on the phone were highly disturbing! Asami simply kneels with her head hanging down as if she's completely obsessed with this man. It's as if she has no life's purpose and her entire existence depends on him. There's no decorations or objects in her room. The room is full of mostly emptiness like her spirit. The man in the bag represents her emotional baggage from past trauma. She can't separate sex, violence, and love from one another. They're all the same to her.

While I'm usually against sex scenes, I thought the sex scene in Audition was decent and added to the story. We learn more about the characters. The sex scene didn't give unnecessary nudity, moaning, explicit sexual intercourse, etc.

At some points of the Audition 1999 movie, we see flashbacks and hallucinations. We see Aayoma's insecurities and possibly abusive personality. We see what he wants to see. We see Asami's origin which appears to mesh with him. It's hard to tell what's real vs. fantasy or how to interpret all of this. Ultimately, these scenes show how disoriented the main character is which made the Audition 1999 movie more disturbing.

The torture scene between Asami and  Aayomas terrifying as well as brutal! There's no music. The creators didn't try to trick you into being horrified with a typical horror soundtrack. There was no excessive and unnecessary blood. Seeing a helpless man get brutally tortured by his lover was horrifying!

What I loved about the Audition 1999 film ending is its ambiguity. It's not clear whether the woman died or survived. Its also not clear what happened to the man after this incident and the trauma he endured. I feel like the man forgave her and probably still kept pursuing her despite everything she did based on his choice of words.

Characters:

I loved the characters because they were relatable.

Aoyama - I loved his character. It reminded me of myself in the past. He does questionable things out of fear of loneliness.

Asami - What made her scary was her deceitful beauty and calculating obsessive personality. She didn't need to be strong to subdue the main character.  Asami's innocent and playful personality, while she did vile things, was what made her scary!

Dialogue:

The dialogue was powerful! At the beginning of the Audition 1999 film, it felt so natural and realistic. As the film progresses, the dialogue becomes haunting! The woman's dialogue in the torture scene sent chills down my spine!

Soundtrack:

The Audition 1999 movie soundtrack gave me chills! There wasn't really any music. Just ambient ominous noises.

Cinematography:

The cinematography made this film scarier! It was disturbing how the camera is shooting and it stays in a fixed position for a while. Seeing images like psychedelics added to the horror and made you question reality! I loved the first-person perspective and shaky camerawork. It made the Audition 1999 film feel more real and lively! It also helped you connect more with the characters!

Acting:

The acting was superb! They were all believable and immersed in their roles! I'm not sure if every character's reaction was realistic in the torture scenes.

Themes:

What made the Audition 1999 film horrifying were the themes. Audition is a horror movie on the dangers of toxic love. The main character was so in love with the woman, he ignored the warnings his friend tried to give him because he was intoxicated to her. People who are in love tend to do that. Before they know it, their partners do horrible things to them. I wonder if the main character himself was traumatized in some way like Asami and if he had free will. Ultimately, the Audition 1999 movie made you feel like these were the characters destinies.

What also made this horror movie disturbing was the message on trauma. The woman was abused as a child and wanted to get revenge. Eventually, it became a lifestyle for her. It's like she expressed her distorted view of love through violence.

Overall, the Audition 1999 movie is a real horror masterpiece. We may never see a horror movie like this again. I highly recommend you buy Audition on DVD!

Audition 1999 special edition DVD

Salo or the 120 days of Sodom is one of the most disturbing horror movies of all time. I was deeply horrified when I first saw it and couldn't sleep. I was still shocked by what I saw and how such terrible things could happen. I thought about the real-life cases similar to the film's depiction which happen and how they could happen. The scenes kept replaying in my head. I was in the mood to watch an extremely disturbing horror movie so after watching Salo, I immediately regretted what I wished for. I had a nightmare about Salo.

When I saw the torture scene at the end, I literally exclaimed "Oh my God! Oh my God!" as I grabbed my chest in horror and disgust. I was the only one watching Salo in the dark so I was trying to comfort myself. Just the name itself "Salo or the 120 days of Sodom" is scary and dark considering Sodom was a city so wicked, the God of the Bible destroyed it.

In this review, I'll give a non-spoiler review first then a spoiler review.

Non-spoiler review:

Cinematography:

Despite Salo being a horrifying film, the cinematography is beautiful. I loved seeing beautiful camera shots of rich and extravagant buildings at the beginning of the movie. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to soothe me from the horrors to come.

Dialogue:

The dialogue in Salo or the 120 days of Sodom was bone-chilling and disturbing. It built up horror and tension very well.

Acting:

The acting is great, especially the actors who played the Libertines. The actors' reactions and dialogue made Salo or the 120 days of Sodom scarier than the torture itself.

Soundtrack:

For much of Salo or the 120 days of Sodom, the libertines played the soundtrack. That was disturbing and creative.

Story:

The story is about fascists who kidnap adolescents and subject them to 120 days of torture.

I must confess this movie is not for everyone. Salo or the 120 days of Sodom was disturbing because the torture was realistic. It was not excessively gory or meant for shock value and entertainment like typical slasher horror movies. If you're looking for that, don't watch this movie. There are no jump scares, obviously fake blood, etc. Just terror.

Themes:

I loved the complex themes of Salo or the 120 days of Sodom. I feel like there's more than one way to interpret the film.

Overall, Salo or the 120 days of Sodom is one of the scariest and shocking horror movies ever made. If you can get past the horror and grotesque nature of the film, you can see how it's a masterpiece. I highly suggest you buy it on DVD!

Spoiler review:

Cinematography:

Despite Salo being a horrifying film, the cinematography is beautiful. I loved seeing beautiful camera shots of rich and extravagant buildings at the beginning of the movie. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to soothe me from the horrors to come. The cinematography was incredible. As the torture is happening, the camera is recording everything from a distance. It's to make you feel disassociated from what's being shown. The set designs are special because they're minimalistic and simple, forcing you to focus on what's shown in front of you.

The camera shots at the circle of death scene increased the dread felt when watching the teens get tortured. This scene was disturbing not from a story point of view but also because the camera angles make you feel like you're a voyeur like the libertines.

Dialogue:

The dialogue in Salo or the 120 days of Sodom was bone-chilling and disturbing. It built up horror and tension very well.

Soundtrack:

For much of Salo or the 120 days of Sodom, the libertines played the soundtrack. That was disturbing and creative. The soundtrack made Salo scarier especially during the circle of death scene. The libertines drown out the horrifying screams, shrieks, and groans of pain from the teens with classical music. This made this scene more horrifying because you're left to imagine what sounds they made while they were tortured.

Acting:

The acting is great, especially the actors who played the Libertines. The actors' reactions and dialogue made Salo or the 120 days of Sodom scarier than the torture itself.

Story:

The story is about fascists who kidnap adolescents and subject them to 120 days of torture.

Salo does a fantastic job of creating dread and learned helplessness. The scene where the libertines give the children the rules is a good example. The servants watching the children know something is terribly wrong but the libertines scare them away.

I was deeply disturbed by the woman telling the story of how she was abused as a child. This realistically shows victims of child abuse can become abusers if they don't peacefully resolve their trauma.

The scene where the libertines point a gun at a boy's head and act like they're going to shoot him but don't. What they say afterward is ruthless and cruel.

The scene where the man forces a girl to eat his defecation was the most disturbing and intense scenes of Salo or the 120 days of Sodom. She's forced to eat it or suffer a worse fate. As a viewer, I didn't want her to do either which made me feel worse.

I was disturbed when the libertines revealed they killed their own mothers. We get no flashbacks which is more terrifying.

We don't learn the victims' names which shows how dehumanized they are. I was disturbed by the various reactions from the adolescents. Some are disassociated, others try to escape, etc. It felt real.

The ending was highly disturbing and scary. The young libertines learn the sadistic and sick cruelties from the older ones. Although the kids went home free, they could never be the same. Their souls will be corrupted by the horrors in Salo. Technically, they're not free because of the extreme trauma they endured.

Theme:

Salo or the 120 days of Sodom has a complex theme. I have two interpretations. One is a political message on capitalism. The hypocrisy of capitalism is the concept of all people being equal are not practiced. People with high social statuses get more privileges than lower classes. The lower class are treated like cattle.

The other way I interpreted it is a message on child abuse. Salo or the 120 days of Sodom exposes the horrors of child abuse. Adults are sick enough to prey on the most vulnerable of society to gratify selfish and vile desires - children. What you see in Salo or the 120 days of Sodom happens more often than people think. It doesn't matter what people's social statuses are, how intelligent they are, how rich they are, etc. Child abuse happens at all levels of society. Salo exposes the disturbing reality that child abuse can happen to anyone. If abusers have enough power and money, they can escape justice.

These themes are what made Salo or the 120 days of Sodom horrifying.

Overall, Salo or the 120 days of Sodom is one of the scariest and shocking horror movies ever made. Salo is powerful because it makes you realize you have a dark sadistic nature like the libertines that you refuse to acknowledge. If you didn't, why would you watch the film in the first place? If you can get past the horror and grotesque nature of the film, you can see how it's a masterpiece. I highly suggest you buy it on DVD!

Sinister is a very dark, twisted, and at times unpredictable horror film. Almost every scene makes you feel apart of the movie. From the very beginning, we see there is already a problem with the house itself. Ellison Oswalt's 7-year old daughter Ashley says she dislikes the house and Ellison makes a deal with her - if he dislikes the house, they would move back to their old house. This is a foreshadowing of what would happen later.

Ellison Oswalt is hellbent on solving the mysterious murder cases of a suspected serial killer throughout the film but what begins as a pursuit of justice turns into an unhealthy obsession. His book on crime was a side project.

If you take notice, he becomes distant from his family and preoccupied with his police work. He becomes less concerned about his family's safety and wellbeing. It was until he and his wife hit a breaking point where his wife made him refocus his attention on his family vs. his book.

His daughter and son show signs of Bagul or the villain of the film but Ellison Oswalt is too blind to realize it. Ellison Oswalt constantly tries to find clues as to who the suspect could be. Little does he know that Bugal had already influenced his children.

At the film's ending, we realize that his daughter Ashley already succumbed to Bagul's influence leading to the whole family's death. Bagul was looking for the perfect candidate to be his ideal daughter. Ashley unlike the other children was such a grand artist and connected well with Bagul. The morale of the story is that when parents fail to spend time with their children, there will always be a malevolent entity who will. Ellison Oswalt realizes too late that his self-centered obsession with fame consumed him and his fate was sealed when Ashley said "Don't worry daddy, i'll make you famous.."

I highly recommend you buy this movie on DVD! How would you benefit from buying this DVD?

Since the director left the Witch 2015 horror film open to interpretation, i can only give my interpretation rather than an explanation. I will give my own interpretation behind the film's symbolism, characters, plot, and finally the ending.

The family is banished and as a result, excommunicated from the Church for being falsely accused of witchcraft. I believe that it is the Witch's deception that causes the family to be innocently framed for such an accusation. If you notice in the film, the Witch tricks the family into believing that Thomasin was practicing witchcraft.

The Witch's identity is never fully disclosed but it appears that the Witch is a foreshadowing of Thomasin in the future. This is due to partially to her behavior towards her sister Mercy as she calls herself "the Witch of the wood" and her later transformation.

If she magically stole Samuel who had yet to baptized then it's likely she would've also known about the family's exile and spiritual state. This becomes more evident as she uses her magic to lure Caleb into her home disguised as a seductively beautiful woman.

Thomasin is a girl struggling to find her own identity in a family who restricts her right to express herself in any fashion she pleases. She loves her family but has no freedom to exercise and so rules over her younger siblings.

Katherine also deeply cares about her family's well being but mistrusts Thomasin and William when they fail to protect the family as a whole. She also refused to understand William or Thomasin's dire situation be it external or internal.

William, the father of the household in this scene looks similar to that of some painting of Jesus Christ. William often likes to picture himself as the savior of his family and in this sense, he is arrogant. Throughout the film, he often begs for mercy and forgiveness from God but never receives it because he refuses to trust in God's salvation. William wanted to save himself and his family through his own self-righteous piety and it's this attitude that leads his family to starve. At the end, he puts to rest his self righteousness and allows Black Phillip to kill him instead. William finally puts his trust in the grace of God while dying in the process.

What inspired William to take this action? By watching his son die. In Puritan custom, the father was the head of the household as it was in Patriarchal society. Ironically, the son played the role of a spiritual leader for placing his faith in God as signified by his outstretched arms symbolizing a crucified Jesus Christ and dying a peaceful death. It is unfortunate that the family fails to see this and that is what lead to the family's demise except William's at the end.

As it turns out, Black Phillip was Satan in disguised. The black goat in this time period symbolized the Devil evidenced by images such as the Baphomet. It was Black Phillip who was behind every evil act for the sole purpose of luring Thomasin to fulfilling her destiny of a Witch. Why does Thomasin choose this dark path? She could never find acceptance by even her own family. She could never find grace in God's eyes. If she were to go back to civilized society, she would be killed due to being accused of Witchcraft. If she were to live in the woods, she would starve to death. She comes to believe that God has abandoned her. Who does she have left but the Devil?

She goes to a Witches Coven and partakes in the flying ointment in the beginning of the film, completing her transformation as a Witch.

I think this is one of the most disturbing themes of the film but one of the most true. Some will turn to God in the face of tragedy and others will join with Satan. Nevertheless, it carries on a valuable lesson to it's viewers.

After stumbling across one of the scariest indie horror films, i came across "the Witch" 2015. At first, i was reluctant to watch it under the impression that this was going to be like any other supernatural horror until i watched the trailer. Finally, i gave into temptation and gave it a shot so i watched it.

The film reminded me much like "the Crucible" film and "the Conjuring" but that's probably because it surrounds themes leading up to the Salem Witch Trials. The plot begins in New England 17th century when the family is banished from a Puritan community after being falsely accused for witchcraft. They now have to live in isolation when a supernatural force haunts them as they are confronted with a Witch in the woods.

This film is very well researched into the folklore and history of the time period it was set in. The director drew from Puritan texts and the Geneva Bible among other sources to create a new tale with influences of the past.

What i loved most about this film was the atmosphere, the camerawork, the visual effects and film quality, the bone-chilling and more ambient music, the fleshed out characters, the symbolism, but most of all - the struggle between faith and despair.

As i was watching this film, i could feel the dark supernatural presence the creators wanted to convey and this is what made the film flat out disturbing. The director didn't use any jumpscares or over the edge supernatural show of power. It was the mere ideas and despicable acts committed in this film that will horrify you. He wanted to connect the modern audience with what people in the past feared and he succeeded.

Overall, if you are into supernatural horror and want a breath of fresh air then i highly recommend this film for you on DVD.
